A security guard at Hospital da Restauração (HR), in the central region of Recife, in Pernambuco, was killed while on the last day of his career before retiring. Nivaldo Bezerra da Silva, 66 years old, had his gun stolen by a patient who was trying to escape the hospital during the guard shift. After killing the elderly man, the suspect was beaten and shot dead by other guards when he tried to escape. The information is from the g1 portal.

In addition to Nivaldo, another guard was shot in the chest by the patient, but was not injured thanks to a bulletproof vest. The case happened in the early hours of this Friday (25). At around 4:30 am, the guards were passing weapons to each other, due to the shift change.

At that moment, a patient who had been admitted to the hospital’s orthopedics department since Tuesday (23) took the revolver and ran. Nivaldo and a colleague ran after the man, who shot them both. Health professionals tried to revive the guard, but he did not survive.

Minutes after Nivaldo’s death, a group of security guards manage to reach the patient. Security camera footage shows the moment the suspect appears lying on the ground and two guards standing. Three other guards arrive at the scene and attack the man with kicks. Then, one of the guards shoots the patient, who dies at the scene. The professionals leave the man down and leave on motorcycles.

The defense of the guards, whose names were not disclosed, claims that the shooting was in self-defense. “When the guard approaches, he understands that he [o paciente] he was going to react and fire a containment shot”, lawyer Eduardo Morais told g1.

The man who shot the patient was arrested red-handed. The other guards were taken to the Department of Homicide and Personal Protection (DHPP), in Recife, to give a statement.

Last shift of career

Nivaldo was in the process of retiring and, according to the hospital director, Petrus Andrade Lima, this was the last day he would be on duty at the unit. “The family has already been notified, they are already here, they are already present, receiving support from the hospital […]. He would not be retired, he is in the process of retiring and today was his last shift”, said the manager.

Also according to Petrus, the unit’s security includes 66 guards hired from a private company. Of this total, 16 professionals work on night shifts and 18 on day shifts. The director said that the Hospital da Restauração team will not disclose the name of the patient involved in the case.

“The investigations are being carried out by the Civil Police. The PM was called during the event. And, from now on, what we can say is that, despite the dismay of the entire team, the hospital operates normally. There was no event related to this case,” he said.
