Commercial flights will land at Canoas Air Base. The municipality must meet the demand generated by the closure of Salgado Filho Airport, in Porto Alegre. The capital’s airport is expected to remain closed until May 30. Initially, Canoas will receive commercial flights with humanitarian aid. Afterwards, commercial aircraft will be used to distribute supplies. After the two operations, a flight with citizens from Rio Grande do Sul who were outside the state must land in the region.

More rain is forecast for the region

A cold front associated with an extratropical cyclone off the coast of Argentina will cause heavy rain in the state. The movement takes place from this Wednesday (8) and the situation is expected to worsen on Friday (10). The forecasts are from the MetSul meteorological agency and Climatempo.

There is a risk of new landslides and falling barriers on highways. New flooding must be recorded, which could worsen the situation in cities that still account for flood damage.

The rain should concentrate in parts of the North and Northeast of the state, especially in the Serra region. For the next few days, 100 mm to 200 mm of rain are forecast.

Although the volume of rain is not considered extreme, it will reach the headwaters of several rivers, which flow into Guaíba. MetSul emphasizes that the cyclone that hits Argentina will not approach Rio Grande do Sul. The weather should improve again between Tuesday (14) and Wednesday (15).

Lack of power, water and telephone signal

There are 543,776 homes without water. The number was released by Companhia Riograndense de Saneamento in the balance sheet this Wednesday morning (9). The Ambev factory in Viamão (RS) stopped beer production to bottle drinking water and distribute it to the population.

There is a lack of power in at least 408,000 homes and at least 31 municipalities in the state are without telephone and internet services. Part of the power supply was cut off for the safety of stranded people and rescue teams.
