X-Men ’97 has delighted veteran fans of the first animated series, which serves as a prequel to the current one. But it has also won over a new legion of fans with the quality of its scripts and the care it takes in adapting different mutant arcs.

However, many have asked why Rogueone of the team’s main characters, was able to demonstrate flight capabilities and super strength, after all, she didn’t have the same abilities in X-Men Evolution or in films, for example. And here, you will understand why.

Rogue’s Powers

Rogue (Rogue in the original) has the ability to absorb the target’s memories, powers, personality traits, physical talents and strength through a skin-to-skin touch. And this also absorbs the person’s vital energy, who ends up falling unconscious after contact with the character.

Due to her lack of ability to control such powers, she seeks help from the Professor Charles Xavier, which means that she can, for a short period of time, take the abilities of humans and mutants without hurting them.

The origin of flight powers

Rogue has a very complicated story: she is the daughter of the villain Mystique, which always ended up causing a lot of problems in mutant stories. Mystique has love for her daughter, but that didn’t stop her from taking advantage of her powers. Thus, she took her to the path of shadows, making her daughter participate in the Brotherhood of Mutants.

During this time, Rogue absorbed the powers of Ms. Marvel original, Carol Danvers (before she was Captain Marvel). Thus, Rogue ended up acquiring super strength, the ability to fly and became practically invulnerable to physical damage and poison. She also gained the seventh sense, a precognitive sense, which allows her to anticipate dangers or crises about to occur. But Rogue never learned to use this sense fully.

Rogue absorbing Ms. Marvel’s powers in the comics

As a result, Carol Danvers ended up going into a permanent coma after that (something that only occurs in the animated series, as in the comics she recovers). Unfortunately, Rogue also absorbed Ms. Marvel’s mind in the process and this nearly drove her insane, leading to several scenes in which Rogue finds herself haunted by it.

It is in this despair that she seeks help from Chasrles Xavier, who helps her restore her mental peace. With this, Rogue socially regenerates and becomes one of the X-Men, something that makes her mother furious.

It is worth mentioning that in the animated series, Ms. Marvel’s powers were passed permanently to Rogue. Therefore, she maintains her powers in X-Men 97, which is a continuation of the classic series.
