A one-year-and-three-month-old boy died after suffering head trauma while in the care of his ex-stepmother. The case occurred in Pelotas, in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, last Monday (22). The 21-year-old woman, whose name was not released, was arrested and will be charged with murder.

According to information in the police report, the child arrived at the Pelotas emergency room with head injuries and was declared brain dead by doctors. The young woman claimed that the boy fell while taking a shower, but the police ruled out the hypothesis after identifying injuries incompatible with a domestic accident. Preliminary report also indicates that the child was a victim of beating.

The boy’s father was not there at the time of the crime and had been separated from the girl for a month, according to the police. He has already been heard in the investigation.

The suspect was taken to Perg (Rio Grande State Penitentiary). It was not known whether she already has a lawyer.

The police report points to a possible history of violence against children. According to the document, the boy had already been treated in the emergency room with a broken leg a few months ago. The BO says that the Guardianship Council was called at the time, but the municipality’s Social Assistance Department states that it was not called to assist this family.

A witness from the neighborhood where the incident took place said, in a statement to the police, that he suspected possible attacks against the child on other occasions.

The case is at the DHPP (Homicide and Personal Protection Police Station). The investigation indicates that the victim’s biological mother no longer lives in Pelotas and was not present in the boy’s life.
