Semas promotes 1st Ordinary Meeting of the Technical Chamber on Public Policies for Rural and Sustainable Development

This Thursday morning (25), the State Secretariat for the Environment and Sustainability (Semas) promoted the 1st Ordinary Meeting of the Technical Chamber on Public Policies for Rural and Sustainable Development, in the Plenary at Semas headquarters. On the occasion, a program for the integrity and development of livestock farming in Pará was presented and the program values ​​Sustainable Territories.

The Pará Livestock Chain Integrity and Development Program will be a pioneer in Brazil by establishing bovine traceability in the state – from birth to slaughter –, it mainly guarantees the sanitary and environmental integrity of the animals, it has been built by several hands involving the government, third sector and civil society since the announcement made by governor Helder Barbalho at COP 28, in Dubai, last year.

Indara Aguilar, Production Chain Compliance Coordinator at the Semas Climate Change Directorate, explains that the objective of the technical chamber is to carry out “a quality immersion, so that we look at the Program in a complete way and, above all, to its components, its challenges, seeking to build solutions. Our purpose is that this government ambition, brought by Governor Helder Barbalho, can be implemented on the ground, in practice, and, above all, once implemented, it can bring benefits to the rural producer, to the State’s industry and to the Amazon forest, so that it can be increasingly preserved through more efficient and integral livestock farming,” he said.

The coordinator of Sustainable Rural Development at Semas, Diana Castro, details that during the meeting the strategies that are being implemented for the construction of the State Payment Program for Environmental Services were presented, through the pilot project Valoriza Território Sustentáveis.

“We present the strategy for building the state payment program for environmental services, which is taking place based on a pilot project, called valorizes sustainable territories, which is remunerating and encouraging producers to recover their permanent preservation areas and maintain their forests , its remaining vegetation, standing. In other words, the project pays for those who will recover and the project also pays for the producers who will maintain a quantity of area not exceeding five hectares of preserved forest, of standing forest. And it also pays for agroforestry systems to be maintained”, Diana points out.

Also according to the coordinator, in addition to the financial incentive to pay the opportunity costs of the land, the pilot project also provides for the acquisition of inputs for the recovery and maintenance of these areas. The project will offer technical assistance, environmental and land regularization.
