The plenary of Rio de Janeiro City Council (CMRJ) approved, in a second vote, the Bill (PL) 2415/2023which creates the Municipal Policy to Encourage Women’s Football in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The proposal was authored by councilors Monica Benicio (PSOL) It is Marcos Braz (PL).

According to the PL, football schools or sports projects that receive resources from the City Hall must offer female classes; mixed classes, when there are not enough girls; and professional qualification for those directly involved in sports. The project also foresees the creation of women’s categories in football championships and tournaments held in Rio de Janeiro.

“I want to thank councilors Dr. Gilberto (SD) and Átila A. Nunes (PSD) who added to my mandate to make this project viable. Football is important to the identity of Cariocas and Brazilians. Therefore, the proposal tries to create equal conditions for the practice of sport for both boys and girls”, thanked Monica Benício.

Among the program’s guidelines are the democratization of football practice; breaking down the barriers that make it impossible for girls, teenagers and young women to practice sport; and the expansion of the benefits of sport also for female practitioners.

The matter also establishes the transfer of resources from the municipal treasury, local authorities, foundations or public companies to schools and football projects, either directly or via third parties.

The mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD) will have up to 15 working days to sanction or veto the mayor.
