Decision, by Minister Roberto Barroso, also applies to actions in the Court that originate in State courts; the measure runs until May 10

The president of the STF (Supreme Federal Court), Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, ordered the interruption of the counting of procedural deadlines in all actions in the Court that involve cities and municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul or that originate in State courts.

The procedural deadlines were suspended until May 10th. The measure was taken due to the floods that hit several municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul, including the capital, Porto Alegre. The state government declared a state of calamity. To date, 55 deaths have been confirmed. Another 7 are being investigated.

By means of a resolution, Barroso also suspended the deadlines for actions in which all lawyers are registered with the Rio Grande do Sul section of the OAB (Brazilian Bar Association). The Order asked the President of the Supreme Court to take the measure.

On his profile on X (formerly Twitter), STF minister Gilmar Mendes expressed solidarity with the homeless and families who lost loved ones.

“It is essential that civil society comes together and that the authorities involved provide all necessary assistance to the people of Rio Grande do Sul at this difficult time”, https://twitter.com/gilmarmendes/status/1786831585246859478.
