The integrated response forces continued rescue operations this Saturday (4/5), with special attention to the cities of Eldorado do Sul, Canoas, Porto Alegre (Islands region) and São Leopoldo, which concentrated a high number of stranded people after the increase in river levels in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre. Until early evening, the Military Brigade, the Civil Police and the Military Fire Department had rescued 17,965 people and 3,251 animals.

In Serra alone, 431 people were rescued, 145 by helicopters. The dawn without rain in the region ensured the intensification of rescue work for people who were isolated due to the intense rain in the Serra and Alto Taquari. By land, 286 residents were taken to safe locations.

Faced with the biggest flood recorded in the history of Rio Grande do Sul, the government is mobilizing an appropriate response to the magnitude of the environmental disaster. A supranational task forcemade up of more than 3 thousand servers and a fleet of more than 1,460 vehicles, has been decisive for the more than 8 thousand rescues carried out since Monday (29/4).

Alignment with the federal government

Governor Eduardo Leite met with federal government ministers to align flood response actions. In a press conference, Leite reinforced the importance of integrating efforts to expand rescues. According to him, the State will need a robust reconstruction plan to respond to the needs of the population in the face of infrastructure damage.

Installation of three humanitarian bases

Vice-governor Gabriel Souza announced the operation of three humanitarian support bases from Sunday (5/5), which will be installed in Lajeado, Santa Cruz do Sul and Santa Maria. The locations will receive and supply isolated communities with food, drinking water, medicines and hygiene kits.

Transport of medicines

One emergency air operation allocated 52 vials of the clotting factor medication to five patients with hemophilia in the municipalities of Arroio do Meio and Cruzeiro do Sul. They lost their monthly doses during the floods that occurred this week in Rio Grande do Sul. The air transport was coordinated between the Secretariat of Health (SES) and the Military Brigade (BM).

Emergency release of road sections

The concessionaire Caminhos da Serra Gaúcha (CSG) released excerpts for the circulation of vehicles responding to emergencies. The State government monitors the operation. The transit of food goods and medicines, ambulances, fuel, police, fire and civil defense vehicles is permitted from 8am to 6pm, with the exception of the stretch between São Vendelino and Farroupilha (ERS-122), from km 39 to 51, which runs completely banned.

Seven thousand healthcare professionals available

Until this Saturday, SES received the registration of seven thousand professionals in the health sector in the volunteer pool. They may be invited to assist municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul in providing care in hospitals, emergency care units and other health services in the State. Professionals who wish to work on a voluntary basis must complete registration on the SES website.
