Brazil’s housing deficit totaled 6 million homes in 2022, which represents 8.3% of the total occupied housing in the country. In absolute terms, compared to 2019 (5,964,993), there was an increase of around 4.2% in the total deficit of households.ebc.gif?id=1592111&o=node

The data was released this Wednesday (24) by the João Pinheiro Foundation (FJP), the institution responsible for calculating Brazil’s housing deficit in partnership with the National Housing Secretariat of the Ministry of Cities.

The predominance of the housing deficit in the country is in families with up to two minimum wages of household income (R$ 2,640), primarily those in Range 1 of the federal government’s Minha Casa, Minha Vida Program (74.5%). In the general result of the indicator, the excessive burden component with urban rent (families with a household income of up to three minimum wages who spend more than 30% of their income on rent) stands out, with 3,242,780 households, which represents 52.2% of the housing deficit.

“We had a recent period without public housing policy, there was the health and economic crisis, many families were left without income. The main component of the housing deficit is the excessive rent burden, families spending more than 30% of their income on rent. These families are the majority of those who make up this deficit and are in need of new housing,” said the executive director of the NGO Habitat for Humanity Brazil, Socorro Leite. “We need continued public policy with an increase in income, in addition to investment in housing infrastructure.”

According to the study, women account for 62.6% of the total household heads (3,892,995) and black people (except in the southern region of Brazil) are the majority in practically all components, consequently, in the housing deficit itself.

The absolute housing deficit by region is 773,329 in the North of Brazil; 1,761,032 in the Northeast; 499,685 in the Midwest; 2,433,642 in the Southeast and 737,626 in the South region.

Regionally, precarious housing (improvised or rustic homes) is the main component responsible for the housing deficit in the North (42.8%) and Northeast (39.9%), where the rural housing deficit is most relevant. In the Southeast, South and Center-West of the country, the predominance is the excessive burden of urban rent.

The data update for the year 2022 was based on the Continuous National Household Sample Survey, from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Single Registry for Social Programs (CadÚnico).
