The overflow of a dike, responsible for damming the Gravataí River, generated an evacuation alert from Porto Alegre city hall this Saturday for residents of the Sarandi neighborhood, in the north of the city.

The city hall’s alert is aimed at the communities of Asa Branca, Minuano, Vila Elizabeth and Nova Brasília.

The municipal administration guaranteed that it will arrange for the families to be removed with support from the Army and Fire Department. A reception space is also being organized. “I invite residents to leave their homes and come to city hall shelters. The reference point is the Salzano Vieira da Cunha school”, stated Mayor Sebastião Melo.

Flooding in Porto Alegre
