When considering the total population of MS, the aging rate is 43.58%. Among quilombolas it rises to 74.32%. This means that there are around 74 people aged 60 or over for every 100 children among quilombolas.

The majority of the population residing in quilombola territory, in MS, is located in the Capital (38.0%), followed by Jaraguari (24.19%), Corguinho (12.05%), Nioaque (11.79%) , Maracaju (10.91%) and Itaporã (3.05%).

Population – There are 1,519 people living in quilombola territory and of these, 1,145 identify themselves as descendants of slaves. There are 96 men for every 100 women. There are 549 children and 408 elderly people.

The person responsible for the IBGE Traditional Peoples and Communities Project, Marta Antunes, commented on the importance of the research, during the dissemination at an event at the Campinho da Independência Quilombola Community, in Paraty, Rio de Janeiro.

“The publication provides an update on the demographic profile of this population in relation to the 2010 Census. This data is important to support indigenous educational policies, which have a differentiated education policy, as well as health policies, such as vaccination of children, and assistance, which depend on this age group and gender”, he explains.

In the Central-West, the median age within officially delimited Quilombola Territories is 30 years old and outside them it is 34 years old.
