The government of Mato Grosso do Sul sent, this Friday morning (3), support to help rescue victims of the rains that hit Rio Grande do Sul. According to Civil Defense, the storms have already left 37 dead, 74 missing and 74 injured in the state.

In total, 15 firefighters in two vehicles, a helicopter and two rescue boats were sent to help rescue flood victims across the state. The soldiers will travel 1,400 km overland to Montenegro (RS), a city that is 80% flooded.

The vehicles continue with four vessels, equipped with boats, kayaks and rescue equipment. The group has eight water rescue and diving specialists and a doctor.

“We are going to help in the rescue of many people who are stranded in the city, doing a little work, going from boat to house by house, removing people”, said the general commander of the Fire Department, Frederico Reis.

Frederico Reis considered that in a second moment, as soon as the waters subside, the Fire Department is already preparing to send another team, which will continue with soldiers and dogs to help with the search. “At this moment we can only send this group due to the logistics of the location.”

Meteorologists say that the storms that occur in Rio Grande do Sul are a reflection of at least three phenomena that occur in the region, aggravated by climate change. Over the next 24 hours, more rain is forecast.

The tragedy in the state is associated with intense wind currents, a corridor of humidity coming from the Amazon, increasing the strength of the rain, and an atmospheric blockage, due to heat waves.
