Mayor of Canoas: ‘City is destroyed’

In Canoas, the storms left a trail of destruction. By early evening, four deaths had been recorded in the city.
“The city is destroyed. Of the 27 basic health units we lost 19. Of the four UPAs, we lost three. Of the five district pharmacies, we lost four. We lost all four Caps of Canoas. All schools were hit, we lost infrastructure, centers sports, equipment, we will have to rebuild”, said Mayor Jairo Jorge.

Across the state, 230,400 people are away from home. Of this total, 67.4 thousand are in shelters and 163.7 thousand are homeless (people staying with family or friends).
The state has 425 of its 497 municipalities (85%) with some report of problems related to the storm, with 1.476 million people affected.
