The ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) had repercussions among deputies on the federal bench in Pernambuco.

These devices can contain more than 80 toxic substances, increasing the risk of cancer for smokers.

Popularly known as “vape”, the World Health Organization (WHO) states that the use of nicotine in people under 20 years of age can lead to a greater chance of becoming traditional cigarette smokers in adulthood.

In 2023 alone, according to Inca data, 73,500 people were diagnosed with some type of cancer caused by cigarette use. More than 156,000 deaths could be avoided every year if smoking was rejected.

In a note, deputy Eduardo da Fonte stated that Anvisa responded to his request to maintain the ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes in the country.

“The ban on the sale of electronic cigarettes is a victory for the health of the Brazilian people. Users of these cigarettes are more likely to have strokes and heart attacks, in addition to increasing anxiety, depression, mood disorders and panic syndrome. The illegality of vaping in Brazil, in contrast to the permissiveness in other countries, puts everyone’s well-being and quality of life first”, explained Eduardo da Fonte.

Although they are already banned throughout the country, these products can be easily found in stores or online.

Anvisa directors justified in their decision the increase in use among young people in countries that have released it, such as the United States; its potential for dependence due to nicotine, which can be around 20 times more than that of a regular cigarette; and the absence of long-term research.
