With rains that hit the state In recent days, the blood center stocks are compromised. Although the Pelotas region has not been directly affected, the Pelotas Regional Blood Center (HemoPel) needs be prepared to support to municipalities that may be affected by floods.

On Thursday (2) only two donations were registered throughout the morning, an insufficient amount to cover local hospitals, São Francisco de Paula, Pronto Socorro and Beneficência Portuguesa, and 23 other municipalities in the South and Campanha regions. According to the Hemocentro social worker, Márcia Lages, one of the difficulties at the moment is the access of donors from other municipalities to Pelotas, which is why the attendance of local donors becomes even more important. Without a blood supply, it may be necessary to postpone elective surgeries and even put the lives of people who need urgent surgeries or regular blood transfusions for other health conditions at risk.

How to donate?

The would-be donor must look for HemoPel with a photo ID. On the day of donation, you need to be fed, have slept at least six hours the night before and not have drunk alcohol in the last 12 hours. Men can donate every two months, a maximum of four times a year. Women every three months, up to three donations annually. Healthy people, without flu-like symptoms, aged between 16 and 69 years old, weighing more than 50 kilos, can donate. Teenagers (16 and 17 years old) must have authorization from their legal guardians.

If you come into contact with people with communicable diseases, such as Covid or Influenza, it is important to take a break to confirm that you have not contracted it. Anyone who has had one of these illnesses can donate ten days after being considered cured. After receiving vaccines you also need to wait – in the case of the flu and CoronaVac vaccines, two days; for other vaccines against Covid-19, a seven-day interval is required.

Where and when to donate?

The donation service is provided from Monday to Friday from 7:30 am to 6:00 pm, without closing at noon, and the legislation guarantees workers time off on the day of the donation.

The Hemocentro is located at Avenida Bento Gonçalves, 4,569, close to Colégio Municipal Pelotense. The telephone number for further information is 51.3288-9193, or via WhatsApp 53.98156-1209.
