In Minas Gerais, only nine cities can have a second round in the 2024 municipal elections. This is because, according to electoral rules, only municipalities with more than 200 thousand voters have a second round.

In these cases, the second round takes place when no candidate receives 50% of the valid votes (not counting blank and null votes) plus one. In smaller cities, however, the majority election system is used with a simple majority, that is, in the first round the person with the highest number of votes wins, even if it is no more than half.

Minas Gerais cities that have 2nd round:

  • Belo Horizonte
  • Betim

  • Valadares Governor
  • Juiz de Fora
  • Montes Claros

  • Uberaba
  • Uberlândia

When you think about the whole of Brazil, there are 98 municipalities in total that can have the 2nd round. This year, in fact, will be the first time that Palmas, capital of Tocantins, will have the second round. This is because IBGE announced last year that the city reached the mark of 200 thousand voters.
