Have you ever seen a radar covered in a plastic bag? This is a scene that has become common among drivers passing through the state highways of Espírito Santo. The situation repeats itself in all 160 radars spread across the roads for a single reason: the end of a contract.

The operation of the equipment is carried out by a third-party company that installs its own radars to carry out the electronic inspection service. However, with the conclusion of the contracts, it is not possible to continue with the speed measurement and it is necessary to remove them within 30 days after the end of the service agreement, according to the Department of Roads and Highways of Espírito Santo (DER-ES)

As it is within the period to remove the speed check boxes, the company decided to place plastic bags to signal what are radars and what are electronic fencing.

“This way, when professionals look for equipment, any fencing is not removed by mistake. This was passed on to Ipem (Institute of Weights and Measures of the State of Espírito Santo) after our technicians recorded the situation, even out of curiosity and to understand what is happening”, explained Cintia Bruzadelli, instruments manager at Ipem-ES.

Ipem is the body responsible for checking whether the radars are within the necessary requirements for operation. According to Cintia, until the contract was finalized, everyone was considered suitable.

New contract

DER-ES informed, in a note, that it is already in the process of hiring a new company to maintain the equipment. “The approval of the new company that will be responsible for the maintenance of the 160 pieces of equipment that will be installed on state highways under the management of the agency was published in the Official Gazette this Monday (1st), “he stressed.

Although they are not working, the Department advises all drivers to continue to drive at speed. “They must continue to respect the speed limits on the signs, as the devices will be turned on at any time,” he warned.
