Hamas apologizes to the population for the suffering caused by the war

The Palestinian Islamic movement Hamas apologized for the first time to the population of Gaza for the suffering caused by the war with Israel, in a long statement published on the Telegram platform, this Sunday (31) evening.

Hamas “apologizes” for the difficulties caused by the war against the Israeli Army, which began almost six months ago, according to the message, in which it also reiterated its desire to continue the conflict which, it guaranteed, should lead to “victory and freedom ” of the Palestinians.

In the “message of thanks to the people” of the Gaza Strip, Hamas acknowledged “the tiredness” of the population.

The movement insisted on the measures it said it had tried to put into practice to alleviate the difficulties, especially the attempts to “control prices”, “taking into account the ongoing aggression”.

Hamas also stated that it is speaking to “all components” of Gaza society, mentioning other armed movements, “popular committees and families”, to “resolve the problems caused by the occupation”.

Humanitarian needs are immense in the territory, already affected before the war by an Israeli blockade imposed since 2006, poverty and unemployment. Aid is arriving, and most of the population has been displaced to the southernmost part, around Rafah, close to the closed Egyptian border.

This city, which had less than 300,000 inhabitants before the war, currently has more than 1 million, according to estimates by the United Nations (UN).

In recent months, several Hamas figures, such as Khaled Mechaal, former head of the movement’s political office, have stated that sacrifices are “necessary” for the “liberation” of the Palestinians.

The war was triggered by an unprecedented Hamas attack from the Gaza Strip against Israel on October 7. Around 1,200 people, most of them civilians, died, according to official Israeli figures.

In the attack, around 250 people were also kidnapped, 34 died and 130 remain hostages in Gaza, authorities said.

In retaliation, Israel promised to annihilate Hamas and launched an offensive that has killed more than 32,000 people, according to the latest report released on Friday by the Hamas Ministry of Health.

The movement, in power in the Gaza Strip since 2007, is considered a terrorist organization by several countries, including Israel, the United States and the European Union.
