Crater opens into sidewalk and man passing by is swallowed by the hole

A man walking along the sidewalk in Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, in the south of the state, this Monday morning (1st) was swallowed by a crater that opened precisely at the moment the orthopedic doctor was passing by.

The accident happened in the Gilberto Machado neighborhood. The city council reported that the victim is a doctor, but did not disclose the victim’s name or age.

The images show a man in blue walking with a bag. He passes in front of a lot with no parking signs and then the sidewalk gives way and the man falls.

From another angle, it is possible to see that the place was a garage, and when the sidewalk gives way, part of the wall falls onto the hole where the victim is.

A person who was inside the land where the party gave way runs out to see what happened and other people who were on the street also go to the hole to try to help.

Another man approaches the hole and appears to try to talk to the victim and then begins to climb down the hole. Driver Geraldo Mussi was the first to help the victim.

“He arrived, parked the car and went to the hospital to get an exam and came up. The hole sank and the stone fell on top of him. We came and helped him, put him in the ambulance and he was helped”, said the driver.

The doctor was taken to a private hospital and the city council said that Civil Defense teams went to the scene and isolated the area. There is no information about the victim’s health status.

The water concessionaire BRK was also contacted, and a technical team was on site and found that the incident was not related to the water and sewage networks operated by the concessionaire, which are operational.

“There was a loud noise and everything was on top of him. I went down to get it, the other boy came and helped me get the stone. He was asking for help, the stone on top of him was very heavy”, commented Geraldo.

The person responsible for the sidewalk, owner of the house in front, is lawyer Arthur Buteri. He said there was no sign of risk at the location. Still according to Arthur, an engineer was called to assess what happened.

Firefighters said they were not called to the incident.
