The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) recorded a 383% increase in calls to 192 related to dengue cases in Santa Catarina, in the first quarter of this year. Among the regions with the highest increase are Joinville, Blumenau, Greater Florianópolis and Balneário Camboriú.

The Joinville CRU provided 747 services, followed by Blumenau, with 613, Florianópolis, with 240 and Balneário Camboriú, with 214. In 2023, Joinville had recorded 205 services, Florianópolis 135, Blumenau with 11 and Camboriú, 6 services.

At CRU, which is where 192 calls come in, regulatory doctors identify possible cases and direct care according to symptoms. Samu must provide emergency care on site or, if necessary, refer the patient to a hospital with specialized dengue treatment.

According to the regulatory doctor at the CRU in Florianópolis, Nicolas Klein, the patient supposedly with dengue is classified in cases of severity, but depending on the symptoms presented, they have different directions.

— In case of mild symptoms such as high fever, headache, pain in the body and joints and pain behind the eyes, we advise you to go to Basic Health Units or the Emergency Care Unit, the UPA, by your own means — he explains.

Samu is normally called in emergency cases, if the patient is in a critical situation, such as serious complications of the disease, bleeding, breathing difficulties or shock.

— During the call, when we identify criteria for instability or greater severity, we call the ambulance. After primary care, the patient is referred to the sectors where they will be classified as low, medium or high complexity. The symptoms that cause concern are fever for several days, intense prostration, abdominal pain and bleeding — reinforces Nicolas.

In many cases, Samu also transports patients between health units.
