Florianópolis, 04/30/2024 – Santa Catarina generated more than 66 thousand new formal jobs in the economy in the first quarter, 16.9 thousand more than registered in the same period last year. According to an analysis by the FIESC Observatory, industry was the sector of the economy that registered the most vacancies, with 35 thousand new jobs, followed by the services sector, which registered 26.5 thousand jobs in the period. The industry in Santa Catarina was responsible for the second largest balance of jobs in the country.

Within the industrial sector, the textile, clothing, leather and footwear segment led job creation in the first quarter, with 7,855 new vacancies. Among the activities, emphasis is placed on the manufacture of knitted fabrics and artifacts for domestic use, such as duvets and kitchen items and bath towels. Furthermore, there was growth in employment linked to the manufacture of various textile products, such as cotton and raffia bags, destined for the agricultural and industrial sectors.

“Industry is the engine that drives the development of our state, with large-scale employment opportunities that gain prominence on the national scene. In March, the state added 13,900 new formal vacancies to its economy, with industry contributing 6,100 jobs. This is a reflection of a robust industry that has differences capable of attracting people in search of new opportunities”, says the president of the Federation of Industries of SC (FIESC), Mario Cezar de Aguiar.

Segments

The construction segment occupied second place, with the highest balance of industrial jobs in the period, with 7,450 vacancies opened, as a result of the decline in production costs and the gradual improvement in conditions of access to credit. The building manufacturing activity was responsible for approximately half of the jobs created from January to March.

Another industrial sector that stood out was food and beverages, which continues to benefit from the maintenance of family consumption and the increase in the volume of meat exports from Santa Catarina, says the economist at the FIESC Observatory, Marcelo de Albuquerque. The sector generated 4,206 jobs in the first quarter, with emphasis on poultry and pig slaughtering, which saw 1,141 and 746 jobs opened, respectively.

The automotive industry registered 1,710 jobs in the first quarter, compared to 772 in the same period last year. The production of light commercial vehicles, trucks and buses stimulated the manufacture of parts for motor vehicles in Santa Catarina, responsible for the largest portion of the balance of jobs in the sector.
For economist Marcelo de Albuquerque, the links between the automotive and construction sectors benefited industries that supply inputs, such as metalworking and metallurgy, which generated 1,972 new jobs in the quarter.
