Faithful are run over in a procession in Pernambuco; accident left 5 dead and 27 injured

According to the Jaboatão dos Guararapes city hall, the information gathered so far is that the bus driver lost control of the vehicle when going down a hill on Avenida Barreto de Menezes. He even tried to avoid the cars, but hit the faithful. Driver who fled after being run over on Easter Sunday afternoon (31) is wanted by police.

According to G1, a minibus ran over believers who were taking part in a procession in the Marcos Freire neighborhood, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife, on the afternoon of this Easter Sunday (31). The accident left 5 dead and 27 injured, according to the Fire Department, which reported that all the victims were at the religious event and none were inside the vehicle. (see video below).

Without disclosing the names of the victims, the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) reported that the people who died in the accident were:

  • A 75-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries during treatment;
  • A 51-year-old man, who also died while being treated by rescuers;
  • Three women aged 51, 53 and 66: two of them died before receiving care, and one died in hospital.

The driver fled after the collision, but was identified by the city hall. The minibus was on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, has authorization from the municipality to circulate as complementary transport and was carrying passengers at the time of the accident. The vehicle left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and headed towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro.

The collision occurred on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Adelaide hill”, as it is close to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

The Secretary of Social Services of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Maria Jacinta da Silva, confirmed that the minibus lacked brakes during the journey.

The Military Fire Department was called at 5:09 pm. Recife Metropolitan Samu was called minutes earlier, at 4:57 pm, and sent 10 ambulances from the cities of Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Recife, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Moreno.

Military police isolated the area of ​​the collision. Teams from the Institute of Criminalistics (IC) and the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) went to the scene of the accident to carry out investigations and collect the bodies, respectively.
