Young man fights third cancer in 5 years; Forum joins the campaign to win this battle

Guilherme Eckstein Mello, 28 years old, was diagnosed with acute promyelocytic leukemia this April, during routine exams, at the same time he discovered he had dengue fever.

Guilherme’s journey against cancer began in 2019, when cancer was detected in the head of the pancreas. He managed to overcome this phase successfully after removing the affected organ. However, in 2021, the second cancer was diagnosed with the appearance of metastases in the liver. After starting palliative treatment, Guilherme underwent a transplant in August 2023.

Born in São Leopoldo (RS), Guilherme and his family are mobilizing relatives and friends to donate blood at Hospital da Santa Casa, in Porto Alegre, where he is hospitalized. His father, Sílvio Mello, appeals for stocks to be replenished: “My son needs daily blood and platelet transfusions. Yesterday, for example, 5 units of platelets were needed.”

In addition to the blood donation campaign, family members also launched a “Vakinha” to help with the extra costs of daily monitoring at the hospital, which have already exceeded 50% of the established target.

The initial treatment for this type of leukemia is six months, according to doctors Dr. Santiago Cassales Neto and Dr. André Luís Londero, who monitor Guilherme daily. Londero expresses confidence in healing with the treatment, highlighting Guilherme’s physical and emotional strength. All treatment is financed by the Unified Health System (SUS), with resources from the Federal Government.
