The Southern Region of Brazil has seen notable growth in the franchise sector, consolidating itself as an attractive hub for investments in this business model. Revenue of more than R$41 billion in 2023 represents an increase of 10% compared to the previous year. In terms of the number of franchise units in the Region, growth was 5%, reaching more than 34 thousand operations.

Evaluating the three states in the region, the Health, Beauty and Well-being segment is the one with the most franchised units and the one that earns the most. The Entertainment and Leisure, Hotel and Tourism, and Food segments stand out in the franchise scenario in the South with the highest rates of variation in expansion of operations.

In terms of revenue, the State of Paraná grew the most, an increase of 14% in 2023, followed by Rio Grande do Sul with 8.4% and Santa Catarina with 6.7%. Already expanding, the number of units in Santa Catarina increased by 6.2%, with more than 10 thousand points, followed by Paraná with an increase of 4.8% and Rio Grande do Sul with 4.2%.

In addition to the improvement in the macroeconomic situation (lower inflation, resumption of employment and positive GDP), the Association attributes this performance to best practices and lessons learned in recent years (both in relation to processes, relationships with consumers and within the network), omnichannel and the adoption of new formats, in a consolidated environment of face-to-face (and hybrid) activities and habits, with emphasis on events and the resumption of tourism.

Given the expansion in the volume of units and networks, the franchise sector continues to directly employ more people. According to the franchise balance in 2023, the number of direct workers rose from 1,589,276 to 1,701,726, an increase of 7.1% compared to the previous year. The survey also shows that each franchise unit generates, on average, nine direct jobs. In the South, we had growth of 6.5%, which represents around 300 thousand jobs throughout the Region.

Among the states that employed the most, Santa Catarina stands out with 7.7% more formal jobs in franchises.

According to the director of the Southern Region, Andre Belz, local entrepreneurs and investors have identified the potential of Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná, thus contributing to the growth of the sector and the local economy.
