MCom releases new Digital TV channels in 35 Brazilian cities

This Monday (29), the Ministry of Communications (MCom) published in the Official Gazette of the Union (DOU) ordinances authorizing the operation of new Digital TV channels for 35 cities, reaching 12 states. With the authorizations, more than 1.2 million people will now have high-quality, interference-free television.

Among the federation units, most of them are in the Northeast region, covering almost 500 thousand inhabitants of 13 cities: They are: Amarante do Maranhão (MA), Bacabal (MA), Caxias (MA), Pedreiras (MA), Santa Helena ( MA), Campo Maior (PI), José de Freitas (PI), Luzilândia (PI), Piripiri (PI), Valença do Piauí (PI), Pombal (PB) and Guamaré (RN) and Areia Branca (RN).

In the North, authorizations for new Digital TV channels went to seven cities, which have approximately 207 million inhabitants. The municipalities reached were: Alenquer (PA), Almeirim (PA), Mocajuba (PA), Mojui dos Campos (PA) and Xinguara (PA).

In the Southeast region, covering more than 270 thousand people, the cities benefiting from the grants are Santa Vitória (MG), Barroso (MG), Curvelo (MG), Perdigão (MG), Prados (MG), Monte Carmelo (MG), Nova Venécia (ES) and São Gabriel da Palha (ES). In the South, the Digital TV service will be available to more than 180 thousand residents of the cities of São Borja (RS), Adrianópolis (PR), Bandeirantes (PR), Iporã (PR), Mafra (SC) and Taió (SC) .

In the Central-West, authorizations went to the cities of Curvelândia (MT), Acreúna (GO) and Caçu (GO), benefiting around 40 thousand inhabitants.

The Minister of Communications, Juscelino Filho, explains that the government’s goal is to bring the Digital TV service to all locations in the country. “We are committed to providing the Brazilian population with access to Digital TV, providing citizens with higher quality programming without the risk of interference on the channels.”.

“From big cities to small towns, our mission is to ensure that everyone, without exception, has access to quality transmission”, adds Filho.

With the grants published in the DOU, MCom draws attention to broadcasters observing the deadlines for obtaining authorization to use radio frequency from the National Telecommunications Agency (Anatel) and requesting station licensing before starting operations.
