Teenager run over in Grande Natal dies in hospital, says family | large northern river

The teenager who was run over last Wednesday (27) while trying to cross Avenida Olavo Lacerda Montenegro, in the Parque das Árvores neighborhood, in Parnamirim, in Greater Natal, did not resist and died at Walfredo Gurgel Hospital.

The death was confirmed by the girl’s father, José Lúcio de Sousa Barbosa, this Friday morning (29). According to the family, Maria Ester’s wake will take place at the Assembly of God Church in the Parque das Árvores neighborhood.

The teenager was run over when she was going to the Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes Municipal School, where she studies, located about 3 km away from home.

Without school transport for a few weeks, she went to a bus stop, but gave up due to the delay and was returning home. As she was crossing the street to return, she was run over.

Residents complained that accidents are common on the avenue and said that vehicles often pass at high speed on the stretch.

In a statement, the RN State Department of Traffic (Detran) said that last February it implemented new traffic signs on the busiest section on Avenida Olavo Lacerda Montenegro. According to the agency, 17 new signs were installed.

The agency also said that “a process is open with a feasibility study for the implementation of electronic speed monitoring radars on sections of Av. Olavo Lacerda Montenegro.”
