I understand that legally we cannot give room for subjective interpretations. This is up to the judges and this is how you trust Justice. However, rape cases affect the rest of society too much, as they have not even been raped by the accused, and perhaps have never been raped by anyone, but walk the streets in constant fear.

Go into work scared. Receive promotions with fear. Have fun with fear. Every time a conviction is overturned, a bail is posted, a man laughs at a drunk woman in the bar and gets up from his table to shoot down easy prey… every time I feel scared.

My father, who passed away 23 years ago, raised me as a teenager saying that I couldn’t imply that I wanted sex, because, after that, I couldn’t change my mind. I don’t remember the exact phrase, but it was something like “offering and not implementing is worse than doing it”.

He must have been trying to protect myself from something he saw happen often. He was wrong, I only realized in adult life. We can retreat as many times as we want. A shame that I can’t talk to my dead about such crooked paths. Who knows the impact of sexist generations on our guilty minds.

But the many other women holding signs tell me “me too”, “me too”. And I’m sure that, despite the way we were raised, we will never be alone again. They can come out of jail with their faces up and throw a party for their baller friends on the same night, but we will continue to denounce and talk and scream. Forever.
