Compared to the average for the period between 2015 and 2019, 2022 recorded an increase of 109.8% among female spouses and 92.1% among male spouses

Minas Gerais recorded a spike in the number of same-sex marriages (same-sex couples) in 2022, while marriages between people of different sexes showed a decline. This is what a report released by the Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) shows this Wednesday (27/3).

The numbers are historic: 2022 was the year that recorded the most marriages between same-sex spouses since 2013, when the National Council of Justice (CNJ) approved a resolution that prevents Brazilian registry offices from refusing to convert stable unions between people of the same sex into weddings or celebrating them. In total, there were 1,118 registrations in Minas Gerais alone, 57.2% of which were between female spouses.

The only year in which a drop in the number of these marriages was recorded was in 2020, the first year of the pandemic. Heterosexual marriages also suffered from the impact of the pandemic, but both increased again in 2021: there was a 35.2% increase in registrations and stability in 2022, when compared to the previous year.

In the state, 104,985 marriages were registered in 2022, of which 103,867 (98.9%) were between spouses of different sexes and 1,118 (1.1%) were between people of the same sex – 479 between men and 639 between women.

Comparing with the averages from 2015 to 2019 – the period that preceded the COVID-19 pandemic –, it is noted that marriages between people of different sexes decreased by 5.7% in 2022. Marriages between male spouses increased by 92. 1% (average of 249.4 increased to 479) and those between female spouses grew 109.8% (average of 304.6 increased to 639) in the same comparison.

In relation to 2021 alone – when 815 were registered –, the increase in same-sex marriages was 37.2%.
