Autumn has arrived and the expectation that the heat will go away in Belo Horizonte is melting away week after week with the high temperatures in the thermometers. This Sunday (28/4) and at the beginning of next week, the National Institute of Meteorology (Inmet) predicts maximum temperatures close to the historical record in the capital of Minas Gerais for the final week of April.

A survey published by MetSul based on the analysis of the Inmet database points out that the hottest day of the last week of April in BH occurred in 1998. On the occasion, on the 25th, thermometers registered 32.1 º C in the city in its hottest peak. The next few days shouldn’t be record-breaking, but the heat won’t be much different.

According to Inmet, Sunday will have thermometers indicating 17ºC at its coldest in BH. The predicted maximum is 31ºC, coming close to the historical record recorded 26 years ago. Morning and afternoon will be sunny skies with few clouds and the night tends to be cloudier. The maximum humidity will be 85% and the minimum 30%.

On Monday (29/4), the minimum forecast is 18ºC and the maximum, 31ºC, again. On Tuesday (30/4) and Wednesday (1/5), the hottest moment of the day should have thermometers registering 30ºC. According to Inmet, there is no rain forecast for any of the days mentioned.

The forecast for the Brazilian autumn, published by Inmet at the end of March, already projected a warmer season than usual in the state. In the Southeast Region, the forecast was for an accumulation of rainfall slightly above the historical average in the South of Minas and within expectations or slightly below average in the rest of the map. As for temperature, the numbers were expected to be higher than usual in all regions of Minas Gerais.

Brazil hot

The weekend will also be hot in almost the entire country, especially in the Central-West and Southeast regions, which are expected to record temperatures well above the average for this period of the year.

Taking the capitals as an example, this Sunday, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and Vitória have maximum temperatures predicted at 34ºC, 33ºC and 30ºC. In the Central-West, forecasts are 30ºC in Brasília; 34ºC in Campo Grande and Goiânia; and 36ºC in Cuiabá.

Despite the high numbers, Inmet does not classify the current moment as a heat wave. The agency highlights that the nomenclature is used when the forecast indicates temperatures at least 5ºC above the monthly average for a minimum period of two to three consecutive days in a given area of coverage.

In the last year, all periods recorded temperatures above the historical average (calculated since 1961) in Brazil. From July to November last year, each month was the hottest in the country’s history. The country has already had three heat waves this year. In 2023, Inmet calculates nine waves throughout the year.
