Brazilian tennis player Beatriz Haddad Maia beat American Emma Navarro this Saturday (27) by 2 sets to 0, with partial scores of 6-4 and 6-4, in the second round of the WTA 1000 Madridand advanced to the round of 16 of the tournament.
On the clay in the Spanish capital, the 27-year-old from São Paulo, currently number 14 in the world, broke her opponent’s serve in the third game, but the American quickly got back at her. Bia Haddad opened 5-3 and then confirmed her serve to close the set 6-4.
In the second set, the two ended up tied at 4-4, until the Brazilian broke the American’s serve to then confirm her serve and win the match.
Bia Haddad’s next opponent will be the Greek Maria Sakkari, number 6 in the world, who beat the American Sloane Stephens (33rd), 6-1 and 6-3.
Also this Saturday, world number one, Iga Swiatek, beat Romanian Sorana Cirstea (30th) with a double 6-1, in just over an hour and fifteen minutes of play.
In the round of 16, the Pole will face the Spanish Sara Sorribes (55th), who, this Saturday, beat the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka (26th) by 7-6 (7/0) and 6-3.
Another favorite, American Coco Gauff, number three in the world, will face her compatriot Madison Keys in the round of 16 after beating Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska (34th) 6-4, 6-1.
