Special Education in Santa Catarina is a national reference for humanized and innovative care. An example of this is the Reference Center for Assistive Technology (CERTA), from the Santa Catarina Foundation for Special Education, also called “Maker Space”, where forms of rehabilitation for student education are developed, offering new ways of teaching for all teachers who want the Foundation’s assistance. In the space, several activities are offered in different environments.

The Maker Space coordinator, Ana Carolina Rodrigues Savall, explains how the delivery of a humanized and personalized service demonstrates FCEE’s attention to any professional who works in Special Education and wants to improve their way of teaching. “The applicant can come to our Space and, in addition to seeing our structures, they can also closely monitor what is being built. We give you the possibility to choose from the material that will be used, to the color of the device.”

In the Technological Sector of the Maker Space, digitized and printed materials are made, providing the necessary support for teachers who want to improve student learning. The Craft Sector, with materials designed to contribute to sustainability, is an alternative for teachers who do not have many resources, and who also wish to improve their delivery to students.

Taking advantage of the space and learning new ways of teaching, the APAE Apiúna teacher, Vilma Fritz, went to the space to acquire new knowledge and pass it on to the other teachers in her education network. The teacher also comments on the importance of this attention to Special Education, providing opportunities for everyone. “With low-cost materials, we will build new ways of teaching for students who need them, opening our classes to everyone.”

Professor Juliana de Almeida Freitas, from Colégio Nossa Senhora de Fátima, who provides Specialized Educational Assistance (AEE), highlights the quality of the FCEE course and its availability for all professionals. “I came here to further qualify my work, because when it comes to special education, the Foundation is a reference.

Investments in Special Education

In 2023, more than R$244 million were transferred to the 244 partner institutions. The transfers include the values of the Direct Transfer Model (MRD), for the direct hiring of teachers and other necessary professionals, with the maintenance of technical-pedagogical activities. In addition to the transfers, FCEE also maintains the teacher transfer program, which in 2023 reached around 2,400 teachers, including permanent and temporary teachers, transferred to work in the institutions.

Recently, in yet another action to enhance Special Education in Santa Catarina, the State Government launched the Gente Especial program. Through a Decree signed by Governor Jorginho Mello, payments to institutions will be regularized, reducing bureaucratic obstacles and facilitating the receipt of resources aimed at specialized educational services in Santa Catarina.
