Santa Catarina was one of only two states in the country where 2022 recorded more births than 2021, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The increase was 2%, well against the country’s trend, where the national average was -3.5%, the lowest level since 1977. The only other state to see an increase was Mato Grosso (1.8%).

The data is part of the Civil Registry Statistics survey, which provides data on the behavior of Brazilian families across four axes: births, deaths, marriages and divorces. Click on the topics to access information about each indicator:

SC has a rise in births again after two years

In 2022, Santa Catarina had 98,181 births, an increase of 2% compared to the previous year. The state registered an increase again after two years of decline: 2020 (-0.2%) and 2021 (-1.8%).

The increase in births is related to the easing of the Covid pandemic, where families avoided having children in the years with the highest number of cases.

In Brazil, 25 of the 27 Federation Units had a reduction in the number of births compared to 2021. This indicator left the average negative at -3.5%.

The numbers consider children born in 2022 and registered until the first quarter of 2023. Of the total live births in Santa Catarina, 0.7% were not born in hospitals and 51.3% were men.

There was also a 5.3% increase in births in Santa Catarina to foreign mothers, totaling 1,439 occurrences.

SC has the highest number of marriages in 10 years; union between same-sex couples rises 29%

With an increase of 11.2%, almost triple the national average (4.0%), Santa Catarina celebrated 35,621 weddings in 2022. The absolute total is the highest in the historical series that began in 2013 and has not been surpassed since 2017 (34,098 ).

The increase was the third largest in the country, behind only Roraima (20.9%) and Acre (17.5%). It is the second year in a row that Santa Catarina has had more weddings than the previous 12 months.

Marriages between same-sex spouses grew 29.7% in 2022, also consolidating the highest absolute total in the historical series, with 524 celebrations, 308 of which were between female spouses (58.8%) and 216 between male spouses (41.2% ). There was also a national increase in unions between same-sex spouses (19.8%).

In the state, men married on average at 31.0 years of age and women at 28.8 years of age, data also below the national average, which was 31.5 and 29.1, respectively.

Divorces: unions in SC lasted an average of 14.6 years

Just like marriages, divorces also increased in Santa Catarina, but at a much lower level. In 2022, compared to 2021, the increase was 0.5%, well below the national average for the same period, which was 8.6%.

It was the fifth consecutive year of growth in divorces in the state. “The average duration of marriages in Santa Catarina was 14.6 yearsthe tenth largest among the Federation Units”, pointed out the IBGE.

The average number of marriages reduced in 2022, as in 2021 it was 15.1 years. Even though it is falling, it is still higher than the national figure of 13.8 years.

The average age of men at divorce (44.2 years) in the state was 2.9 years higher than that of women (41.3 years). In Santa Catarina, the period of time in which couples separated the most was between 5 and 9 years, with 22.8% of divorces.

Deaths: after an increase of almost 30%, deaths reduce in the state in 2022

After two years with an increase, reaching 28.7% between 2020 and 2021, at the height of the pandemic, Santa Catarina ended 2022 with a 14.5% reduction in deaths.

The drop was smaller than the national average, of 15.8%. There were 50,694 occurrences, 54.5% of which were male, 45.5% female and 0.07% of unknown gender.

The age group with the highest number of deaths is over 60 years old, with 73.4% of records, the vast majority from natural causes.

Of the deaths among people aged 15 to 29 in Santa Catarina, 74.3% were men, which represents around 3 in every 4 deaths among young people.
