The Legislative Assembly of Paraíba approved Bill 412/2023, by deputy Galego Sousa, which creates the Safe Maternity Policy within the State of Paraíba to promote the reduction of maternal and neonatal mortality. The text was unanimously approved during an ordinary session held this Tuesday (26).

The matter approved by parliamentarians guarantees comprehensive and humanized assistance to pregnant and postpartum women, proposing a multidisciplinary approach, making motherhood safe and healthy for mothers and their babies. The text argues that, in addition to promoting the implementation of a new model of care for women’s health and children’s health with a focus on childbirth and birth care, publicity should also be encouraged about the severity of maternal and child deaths, their causes and social and health effects and ways to avoid them.

According to deputy Galego Sousa, the PL is based on data from the United Nations (UN) and the Ministry of Health. For the parliamentarian, approval is a significant step towards women in Paraíba’s access to healthcare. “The creation of the Safe Maternity Policy is a crucial measure to reduce maternal and neonatal mortality rates in our state, ensuring respect for human rights and the provision of qualified assistance throughout the gestational and postpartum cycle”, he explained. the parliamentarian.

The Legislative Branch of Paraíba also approved PL 935/2023, which proposes the creation of the State Campaign to Support Mastectomized Women. Authored by deputy Camila Toscano, it aims to offer assistance and support to women who have undergone mastectomy, with a focus on physical, emotional and social recovery, within the state public health network. Camila considers it essential to provide broad support to mastectomized women, considering not only physical recovery, but also emotional and social support. The campaign includes guidelines that range from psychological support to access to breast implants and support groups, aiming to ensure a complete and welcoming approach for women affected by this condition.

“It turns out that not all mastectomized users are immediately eligible for the procedure, and must be approached by a multidisciplinary team, to assess the clinical possibility of the intervention and the woman’s own preference. In this sense, this public policy provides a broad range of support for women undergoing mastectomy”, argued Congresswoman Camila.

Still in reference to Women’s Month, the deputies were in favor of the approval of PL 1,343/2023, by deputy Eduardo Carneiro, which establishes the Policy to Combat Sexual Harassment and other violence committed against women in Higher Education institutions in Paraíba.

Higher Education Institutions in the State of Paraíba must forward complaints to the competent bodies, such as the Public Prosecutor’s Office, Police Stations, Guardianship Council, Public Defender’s Office and others after investigation and judgment regarding the materiality and authorship of the facts reported.

Also according to the text of the PL, if there is a need for emergency measures to protect the complainant, such as withdrawal from academic guidance, suspension of classes taught by the active subject of violence, among other cases, the competent authority must immediately remove the person accused of your unit/body on a precautionary basis or, depending on the case, definitively.
