According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 1 million cases of curable sexually transmitted infections are recorded worldwide each day, among people aged 15 to 49. Belo Horizonte follows the upward trend registered in the world and in Brazil.

According to infectious disease specialist of the Coordination of Sexual Health and Care for Sexually Transmitted Infections of the Municipal Health Department, Cíntia Parente, an increase in the demand for care has been observed in the last four years, at URS Centro-Sul, a reference unit for care for sexually transmitted infections .

The unit provides open-door care and has patients with genital ulcers, urethral discharge and vaginal discharge. An increase in cases of acquired syphilis has also been noted in recent years. In relation to HIV and viral hepatitis, this number is stable, each year new cases are registered, but the number of new cases has not increased.

“It is very important that the person who has any symptoms, or even the person who wants to be tested, even asymptomatic, seeks the service to take the rapid test. You should also look for prevention actions, not wait until you get sick. Look for the service we have for prevention actions and, if she has any symptoms, look for the units that provide this service, so that treatment can be carried out and, even, so that there is no transmission to other people”, explains the doctor.

The infectious disease specialist also explains that if the person has any symptoms of a sexually transmitted infection, they should look for any of the health centers in Belo Horizonte, where a medical evaluation and rapid HIV tests will be carried out. hepatitis B, hepatitis C and syphilis. If the test is positive, these patients are referred to the specialized care service in Belo Horizonte.

“In addition, we have URS Centro-Sul in Belo Horizonte, which is located on Rua Paraíba, and provides open-door care for sexually transmitted infections such as genital ulcers, urethral discharge or vaginal discharge. The user can also look for this unit, where they will find a service specialized in sexually transmitted infections”, warns doctor Cíntia Parente.
