US abstention leads to ceasefire passing at UN
For the first time, a ceasefire resolution was approved by the Security Council — marking a change in the American position. The text also determines the immediate release of hostages held by Hamas and the opening of Gaza to international aid.
The decision angered Israel, which canceled a diplomatic visit. The group would debate with the Americans an alternative to Israel’s planned invasion of Rafah. The prime minister accused the White House of abandoning its “principled position.”
32 thousand Palestinians have died since the start of the war; Hamas extremists have killed more than 1,160 Israelis. At least 130 people are still kidnapped, and 32 died during their time in captivity, Israel says.
