Video game adaptation set completely new standards in 2001.

Like many film adaptations of games, Final Fantasy did not meet fans’ expectations – especially at the box office: with a budget of 130 million dollars and another 30 million in advertising and marketing, the sci-fi action film only grossed 85 million. box office, and reviews were mixed at best.

But no one can deny that, in terms of technological tricks, the film achieved absolute pioneering. Final Fantasy was the first film production to use motion capture to create realistic computer-generated characters. Digital artists and animators worked on the work for four years – an effort that was not worth it, at least from a commercial point of view.

The film was directed by Hironobu Sakaguchi, the inventor of the video game series of the same name. The focus of the plot is the researcher Aki Rosswhich, in the year 2061, faces a powerful alien life form that has dominated Earth for decades.

So when we look at the development of digital animation art, there is no way to ignore Final Fantasy. Despite the disappointment at the box office, the film managed to achieve minor success with its DVD release. The originally planned sequels and prequels were, however, put on hold.

Final Fantasy is available to buy or rent on Prime Video.
