Solo Leveling: ARISE delivers action game for webtoon fans | Analysis / Review

-

This Wednesday (8), the game Solo Leveling: ARISE was launched as Netmarble’s latest action game – the same as titles like A3: Still Alive It is Blade & Soul: Revolution. It is an adaptation of a South Korean webtoon called Solo Leveling.

Does the title offer good fun to the player? What are the highlights it delivers? TudoCelular tested the game in the last few days in early access and tells you about it.

History

Solo Leveling: ARISE brought an adaptation of the South Korean webtoon/anime to mobile devices and computers. The plot tells the story of Sung Jinwoo, a hunter considered weak who finds himself in the middle of a fight for the survival of the human race.

In this context, humans begin to rely on magical abilities, used in combat against monsters. Thus, the protagonist ends up awakening his special talent amidst the chaotic scenario.

Unlike what is seen in South Korean animation, in the game, the story does not portray the main character alone. He counts on the help of up to three other members during missions.

Dialogues occur at a higher frequency than desired, which can become a little tiring for players who want more moments of action. You even have the option to skip lines, but you may miss an important part of the story.

Although the preview version does not have a Portuguese localization, the final edition already has menus and subtitles in Portuguese. We always reinforce the importance of having translation, to generate greater identification with the local public.

Gameplay

The mechanics are an action genre, with missions that require the protagonist to achieve some objective or reach a specific location. As you progress, it is common for weaker enemies and other giant monsters to appear.

As already mentioned in the story, Sung Jinwoo is not alone on this journey. It is possible to put helpers into action automatically or when manually requested by a specific command.

In an attempt to maintain fidelity to the original work, the developer brought the main resources and weapons portrayed in the animation, while adding more characters and missions to expand the game.

Although the missions are short, you can explore other minigames with different challenges, such as racing against time. The skill system pleases you and requires you to collect items and coins throughout the adventures, which are achieved without major challenges.

Throughout the tasks of clearing the gates and beating the bosses, you can see an increase in difficulty. This occurs quite smoothly at first and follows the player’s knowledge of the skills provided by the gameplay. After a while, you may feel a more complex aspect to winning without sticking to microtransactions.

We played the Android version and noticed good input of commands on the touch screen. Right from the start, you can even choose the layout of the buttons, to configure what is most interesting for your style of play.

Graphics and soundtrack

Although it is a game also created for PCs, it is very well adapted in terms of graphics for cell phones. The quality is pleasing, with good colors and a high level of detail in the scene elements.

One of the points noted in the preview version is that the loading screens have a slightly longer than normal waiting time. Even so, during the missions, you will have great fluidity in your movements, physical attacks and magical specials.

Another characteristic to highlight in the visual part is the fidelity of the lines in relation to the original animation. Both cutscenes as the gameplay moments are made following the design already known to fans.

The soundtrack adapts well to any environment. You can feel more immersed in the mission with the sounds included in the game. They get the ambience right, especially during boss fights.

It is worth noting that the game has voice acting in English, Japanese and Korean. It stands out for taking advantage of the anime’s original voice actors for the game, which is always positive for those who follow the animations and venture into the game later.

We just missed voices in Portuguese, something that we emphasize to expand the local audience base and identification with these same players.

Final considerations

The game is primarily focused on fans of the South Korean webtoon. In other words, those who know the story and want to see it portrayed and interact with its events through an electronic game.

To reach an audience “outside the bubble”, the game needs to show more. The graphics are a positive point that attracts players, thanks to the elements of the scenarios and the characters’ traits.

However, the challenge lies in the gameplay. In other words, in any future updates, the game will need to provide greater variety to combat and have dynamic events, to win over more gamers.

The mechanics are the game’s weak point, as it offers few differences and a lot of repetition.

Well-made visuals, with faithful features and scenes full of beautiful elements, even on cell phones.

Sounds contribute positively to the experience.

Immersed

Immersion is driven by the story, graphics and soundtrack, but is less than desired by excessive dialogue and less than desired gameplay.

Total Grade

The game delivers a satisfactory experience overall, but it should be niched for Solo Leveling fans.
