Spanish women decide the title in Madrid against Siegemund and Krejcikova

Madrid (Spain) – Spanish fans will have the opportunity to support two home players in the doubles final of the WTA 1000 in Madrid. Seeded 8, Cristina Bucsa and Sara Sorribes secured a place in the decision with their victory over Russians Anastasia Potapova and Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova by 6/4 and 7/6 (7-1).

Bucsa and Sorribes had debuted in Madrid, beating the Brazilian pair of Bia Haddad Maia and Ingrid Martins. Next, they beat Taiwanese Hao-Ching Chan and Russian Veronika Kudermetova, champions of Stuttgart. In the quarterfinals, they went through the Chinese Xinyu Wang and Saisai Zheng.

At 26 years old, Bucsa is trying to win his third doubles title on the circuit. Partner Sorribes, 27, has four doubles wins in her career, including a WTA 1000 in Beijing last season.

The opponents in the final scheduled for next Sunday will be the Czech Barbora Krejcikova and the German Laura Siegemund, who beat the tournament’s top seeds, the Belgian Elise Mertens and the Taiwanese Su-Wei Hsieh by 6/3 and 7/5.

Former number 1 in doubles, Krejcikova has accumulated 18 titles on the doubles circuit. She was the Madrid champion in 2021. In singles, the 28-year-old Czech won Roland Garros three seasons ago and reached 2nd in the individual rankings. The experienced Laura Siegemund, 36 years old, is number 6 in the ranking and occupies 14th place.
