Athletico debuts tomorrow in the South American against Sportivo Ameliano

Furacão and Ameliano are in Group E of the continental tournament. The bracket also includes Danubio (Uruguay) and Rayo Zuliano (Venezuela). Only the first placed team advances to the round of 16 stage. Whoever finishes in second place competes in a playoff against the teams that finish third in the Libertadores group stage.

O Sportivo Ameliano was founded in 1917 and was competing in the country’s third division until recently. The team from the Virgen del Huerto neighborhood, in the capital Asunción, won the most important title in 2022, by beating Nacional in the decision. In the Super Cup, against Olímpia, they overcame a packed Defensores Del Chaco and secured another cup.

It will be the first game in history between Athletico and Ameliano.

A possible lineup has: Benedict; Léo Godoy, Pedro Henrique, Gamarra and Esquivel (Fernando); Fernandinho, Felipinho, Christian (Alex Santana) and Zapelli; Canobbio (Cuello) and Mastriani.

The team led by Paraguayan Pedro Sarabia is coming off a 1-1 draw against Tacuary last week. Without absences due to suspension, the tendency is for the team to have few changes compared to the previous game.

A possible lineup has: Nicolás Rossi; Juan Patiño, Julio González, Marcos Martinich and Francisco Báez; Aldo Maíz, Fredderick Alfonso and Alberto Contrera; Alejandro Samudio, Richard Torales and Milciades Adorno.

  • Referee: Andres Merlos (Argentina)
