Senate moves forward with CPI to investigate manipulation of results

The Federal Senate will initiate the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (CPI) to investigate cases of match-fixing in Brazilian football in April. 109 football matches played in 2023 are suspected of being manipulated to favor bettors.

Senator Jorge Kajuru (PSD-GO) will be the president of the CPI on Manipulation of Football Results, and senator and former player Romário (PL/RJ) will be the rapporteur. The parties will define the main and substitute members for the CPI, which will invite directors, players, referees and also corrupt officials.

The Sports Betting CPI will be made up of 11 full senators and 7 alternates, lasting 180 days. The collegiate will investigate facts related to allegations and suspicions of manipulation of results in Brazilian football, involving players, managers and betting companies.

According to Kajuru, John Textor, majority partner of SAF do Botafogo, should be one of the first to be heard. The North American claims that Palmeiras has been benefiting for two years and stated that two of Verdão’s games in the 2023 Brasileirão, against Fortaleza and São Paulo, were manipulated. The businessman presented evidence to support these allegations.
