Wiesbaden (Germany) – Laura Pigossi’s debut at the ITF W100 in Wiesbaden, on clay courts in Germany, was a very quiet victory. The number 2 in Brazil and 124th in the world needed just 1h02 to beat the 21-year-old local guest Julia Middendorf, ranked 376th, by double 6/1.

5th seed in the event, Pigossi did not have his serve broken in this Tuesday’s match and faced only two break-points. With constant pressure on her opponent’s service games, the 29-year-old from São Paulo created 12 break opportunities and took advantage of five.

The victory in the debut and the place in the round of 16 already earns 12 WTA points for Pigossi, who defends just three this week. She is gaining two positions. If she reaches the quarterfinals she will score 21 points and gain two more positions. The tournament awards 100 points to the champion, 65 to the runner-up and 39 to the semi-finalists.

Pigossi’s next opponent in Wiesbaden will be Czech Tereza Martincova, who was ranked number 40 in the world in 2022, but is currently only 193rd in the rankings, at 29 years old, after suffering a shoulder injury last season. The confrontation is unprecedented on the professional circuit.

Gabriela Cé falls during her debut in Italy

Also on European clay, Gabriela Cé from Rio Grande do Sul was eliminated in her debut at the ITF W35 in Santa Margherita di Pula, Italy. The 31-year-old left-hander, ranked 429th, lost 6/2 and 6/3 to Georgian Sofia Shapatava, 35 years old and ranked 593rd, in 1h21 of the match.
