LALIGA files complaint after racist insults against Sevilla player and coach

LALIGA denounced the racist and xenophobic insults directed at Marcos Acuña, defender of the Sevillaand coach Quique Sánchez Flores for part of Getafe fans during the Spanish Championship game last Saturday (30).

Sevilla condemned the abuses, and LALIGA has now lodged an official complaint with the Anti-Violence Commission and the Competition Committee of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) regarding the two incidents at the Coliseum Alfonso Pérez.

The game was temporarily stopped in the 68th minute with a warning issued over the stadium’s loudspeaker – as stipulated by LALIGA’s anti-racism protocol – after racist insults were heard being shouted by a section of the fans, according to the referee’s report on the scoresheet. .

Sevilla coach Quique Sánchez Flores said at a press conference after the 1-0 victory that he was called a “gypsy” by a group of fans during the encounter.

Another racist episode marred Spain on Saturday when Rayo Majadahonda goalkeeper Cheikh Sarr received a red card for confronting a fan who allegedly racially insulted him in a 3rd division match, against Sestao River. The visiting team refused to continue the game after the red card.

Saturday’s incidents occurred just days after the Spain face the Brazil at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, in a game organized to raise awareness about racism.

Before departure, Vinicius Jr.striker of Real Madridheld an emotional press conference where he was asked about the frequent racist abuse he has suffered since arriving in Spain.

After the latest racist incidents over the weekend, the Brazilian took to social media to show solidarity with Sarr, Acuña and Sánchez Flores.

“If all players of color were like him [Vinícius]racism would end,” said Sarr.

“I would give anything for him [Vinícius] because he has been through this many times. I’m very proud of him for speaking out. Thank you for supporting me and fighting racism, because he can’t do it alone.”
