The company that owns Formula 1, the American Liberty Media, announced, this Monday, the purchase of the company that owns the rights to the MotoGP World Championship, Dorna Sports, based in Madrid, Spain.

Liberty Media will buy 86% of Dorna Sports, while the company’s directors will maintain control of the remaining parts, for a value of 4.2 billion euros (R$22.9 billion at current prices), including debts.

“We are very happy to expand our portfolio in the sports and entertainment sector with the acquisition of the MotoGP championship”, said the general director of Liberty Media, Greg Maffei, quoted in a statement.

“It is a developing company and we want to grow it for the MotoGP fans, the teams, their commercial sponsors and our shareholders,” he added.

The general director of Dorna Sports, Carmelo Ezpeleta, will continue in charge of the MotoGP championship, as reported by Liberty Media.

“It is the ideal stage in the evolution of MotoGP and we are excited about this new milestone for Dorna,” said Ezpeleta in the same statement.

The operation, which Liberty Media hopes to conclude before the end of 2024, must be validated by regulatory authorities in several jurisdictions, the American group said.
