The president of the Legislative Assembly of Minas Gerais (ALMG), deputy Tadeu Martins Leite (MDB), received, on Monday night (29/4/24), the Ensign Tiradentes Trophy. The award was given by the Clube dos Oficiais Militares Minas Gerais at its headquarters, in the Prado neighborhood, West region of Belo Horizonte. It evokes the libertarian ideals of the martyr of the Inconfidência and seeks to value citizens who have stood out in the community.
This year, 72 military and civilian personnel were honored. Among the authorities who attended the event were the general commander of the Military Police, Colonel Rodrigo Piassi; and the general commander of the Military Fire Brigade, Colonel Erlon Dias do Nascimento.
Official speaker of the ceremony, deputy Tadeu Martins Leite stated that he felt honored and moved by the honor received. He highlighted the legacy of commitment and dedication of the Officers’ Club and praised the trajectories of the honorees. Furthermore, the head of the Minas Gerais Parliament recalled Tiradentes’ struggle in defending freedom and democracy.
The president of the Officers’ Club, Colonel José Guilherme do Couto, alluded to the heroes to emphasize their relevance for building a country and reinforced the institution’s commitment to the values shared by the martyr of the Inconfidência. The colonel also cited the difficulties faced by the public security system in Minas Gerais and charged Governor Romeu Zema (Novo) in relation to promises made to the category over the last few years.
The trophy was established by the Officers’ Club in 1983 with the aim of honoring and perpetuating the memory of Ensign Joaquim José da Silva Xavier, Tiradentes, who was part of the Regular Cavalry Regiment of Minas Gerais.
The award is given annually in April to remember the Inconfidência Mineira and the anniversary of the founding of the Clube dos Oficiais, which turns 76 in 2024.
