Nico Hulkenberg is pleased with Haas’ progress at the start of the 2024 Formula 1 season, but believes the true extent of the team’s progress will be evident at the Suzuka circuit.

After taking Haas’ first point in Saudi Arabia, Hulkenberg led teammate Kevin Magnussen in Australia to secure both cars within the points zone.

Haas had started the season with new team principal Ayao Komatsu tempering expectations. However, Hulkenberg feels pleasantly surprised by the progress made in aerodynamic development, which has translated into more efficient tire management at race pace.

But the experienced German driver warns that the challenging Suzuka circuit in Japan could be a tough track for Haas due to the track’s high-speed characteristics.

“I think we made some great progress in a short period of time in December when the aerodynamics guys found a lot of performance, and somehow fixed the aerodynamic mapping issues we had last year. This means much more consistency in races, and therefore, better tire life and characteristics”, explained Hulkenberg.

At the moment, Haas occupies seventh place in the constructors’ championship.

“I think we should be cautious with all these conclusions,” Hulkenber continued. “Obviously, in Jeddah, we helped our cause with great teamwork. In any case, it takes very little for there to be a big change (in the grid order). So it’s just a matter of maximizing your weekend, every session.”

“And so far, I think we’ve been good at that. Plus, I had a bit of luck on my side, which is always good. But eventually, others will have some luck too. The important thing is that we develop the car and become stronger in everything”, said Hulkenberg after the race in Australia.

Asked about teamwork with his teammate Magnussen, the German driver believes the relationship is working well, despite some personal issues from the past.

“We are working as a team, as a duo. I think we also want very similar things from the car, pulling in the same direction, which is always very good for the team. So they can really go in a single direction. And yes, on and off the track, we get along well, and that’s good”, concluded the German driver.
