A Globe paid a deposit of R$63 million to the eight clubs in the Brazilian Football League (Libra) what closed the Brazilian Championship broadcasting rights contract with the broadcaster for the cycle from 2025 to 2029. Payments were made between Tuesday night (26) and Wednesday morning (27).

The clubs that received the benefit, provided for in the contract, were Atlético-MG, Bahia, Flamengo, Grêmio, Palmeiras, Red Bull Bragantino, São Paulo and Vitória. In total, Globo disbursed R$504 million with this payment.

The amount refers to the 40% that will be distributed to the teams equally, according to the signed contract of R$ 1.17 billion for the sale of the teams’ broadcasting rights for five years for open TV (Globo) and closed TV (Sportv) . The contract also provides for an additional amount on what is collected from the pay-per-view (Premiere).

Among the clubs that are part of Series A in 2024, there are another 11 that are part of the Liga Forte União (LFU), which, to date, has not sold its media rights to any company. This group is made up of: Athletico-PR, Atlético-GO, Botafogo, Criciúma, Cruzeiro, Cuiabá, Fluminense, Fortaleza, Internacional, Juventude and Vasco.

Corinthians and Santos

Corinthians, in turn, which is part of Libra, has so far not negotiated its broadcasting rights with any company. The club currently has a proposal from Globo and Brax Sports Assets, who already has a contract with the team to negotiate advertising signs for Neo Química Arena over the next five years.

Santos, which is part of Libra, but will compete in Série B in 2024, did not receive any amount from Globo. A Sports Machine found that this will happen if the club returns to the first division at the end of 2024.

In addition to the 40% distributed equally among the clubs that signed with Globo, the contract provides for payment of 30% per performance and 30% per audience.

Financial equality

The amount distributed to Libra clubs in Serie A in 2024 will help these clubs be able to compete with LFU teams, who have already negotiated 20% of their commercial rights for 50 yearsstarting in 2025, with three investors: the Brazilian companies Life Capital Partners (LCP) and XP Investimentos, and the North American company General Atlantic.

The clubs received the first installment of this payment. Internacional, for example, the team with the highest value among the group’s members, has already pocketed more than R$100 million.

The reflection of this was already seen in the last transfer window, when the club from Rio Grande do Sul made expensive signings, such as Rafael Borré (R$ 33.2 million), Thiago Maia (loan with obligation to purchase, for R$ 21.6 million), Wesley (R$ 10.8 million) and Lucas Alario (R$ 2.68 million).

Grêmio, in turn, made much more modest investments. However, Tricolor secured qualification to the Gauchão final, after beating Caxias, while Colorado ended up eliminated in the semi-finals by Juventude, on penalties.

The Libra clubs, in turn, negotiated the sale of these rights with Mubadala Capital, from the United Arab Emirates, but this contract was not closed. With the advance of funds from Globo, they are able to come close to equaling the financial disadvantage they had in relation to the rival group.
