Still without playing in a final this season, Novak Djokovic decided to make changes to his team. This Wednesday, the Serbian tennis player announced the end of his partnership with coach Goran Ivanisevic, with whom he had worked since 2018. During this period, Djokovic won 12 of his 24 Grand Slam titles, a record among men.
“Goran and I decided to end our joint work a few days ago. Our chemistry on the court has had its ups and downs, but our friendship has always been solid. In fact, I’m proud to say that, in addition to winning tournaments, we also had a parallel battle in ludo for many years. And this tournament never ends for us. Thank you for everything friend, I love you”, said the tennis player, when publishing the message on social media, alongside a photo in which they both compete in the board game.
Ivanisevic joined Djokovic’s team six years ago, joining the team then led by Slovakian Marian Vajda, the coach who worked most with the Serb throughout his career. The Croatian, who was number two in the world when he was a player, was Wimbledon champion in 2001, relying on the strength of his powerful serve.
Djokovic joked about the high level of his now former coach’s foundation. “I remember clearly the moment I invited Goran to be part of my team. It happened in 2018 and Marian (Vajda) and I wanted to innovate and bring some ‘magic loot’ to our duo.
In fact, we brought not only work, but also laughter, fun, a return to number 1 at the end of the year, records and 12 Grand Slam titles (as well as some finals). Should I mention some drama too?” Djokovic announced on his social media.
Current number 1 in the world, the Serbian tennis player is not making a good start to the season this year. He still hasn’t lifted a single trophy, nor played in finals. In three tournaments played so far, his best result was the semi-final at the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the season.
He decided not to enter the Masters 1000 bracket in Miami, in the United States, a tournament that is currently being played, to focus on his preparation for the clay tour in Europe.
