The number of people killed in the “Easter Tragedy”, which occurred on Sunday (31), in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife, reached six.

The information was confirmed, this Monday (1st), by the State Department of Health (SES-PE).

Shortly after the collision, during a procession held at Conjunto Marcos Freire, four deaths were reported, still on Sunday.

According to SES, two new deaths were announced this Monday morning.

These patients were hospitalized at the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Ibura, in the South Zone of Recife, and at the Hospital da Restauração (HR), in Derby, in the central area of ​​the city.

The following people died:

Edite Maria da Silva, 51 years old

Edson Maurício Barbosa, 52 years old

Cristina Batista da Silveira, 66 years old

Amauri João de LIma, 68 years old

Unidentified 21-year-old woman

Unidentified 62-year-old woman

Hospitalized

Shortly after the accident, the Imbiribeira UPA, according to SES-PE, received 10 patients.

Seven of them were female, aged between 15 and 60 years.

They were treated and have already been discharged from hospital.

Two patients remain under observation, a 47-year-old man and a 59-year-old woman, with a “stable” general condition.

There was one death of a 68-year-old man.

At the Ibura UPA, nine patients were admitted. There was one death of a 62-year-old man.

Two women were medically discharged. Another six patients were transferred to Hospital da Restauração (HR) and Hospital Dom Hélder (HDH).

In total, 12 people were admitted to the General and Pediatric emergencies at Hospital da Restauração. A 21-year-old woman died.

Another woman, aged 62, was discharged from hospital this Monday morning.

Ten patients (9 women and 1 man), aged between 5 and 67 years, remain hospitalized. Four of them (women), including a child, are in a serious condition. The other six people are stable.

At Dom Helder Câmara Hospital (HDH), three patients remain hospitalized. All female and with a general health condition considered stable.

The Otávio de Freitas Hospital (HOF) admitted a female patient, 29 years old. She received care at the Emergency Room and was discharged on Sunday.

How it was

Videos circulating on social media show the exact moment in which the runaway vehicle rolls down the hill and hits the faithful who were walking in the religious celebration, in the midst of the last Easter Sunday celebrations.

After hitting the faithful, the minibus collided against the wall of a house close to the accident site.

Before the collision, the images show dozens of people gathered during the religious celebration, singing Christian hymns played by a sound car.

The procession was at the end of the hill, very close to a sports court, on Avenida Barreto de Menezes.

Before the accident, the images show fireworks in the sky, the faithful singing hymns and raising their arms with white cloths in allusion to Easter.

It was at this moment that the runaway vehicle rolled down the hill and hit people. After the collision, screams and cries are heard amid the tragic scene, with two victims dead and their bodies lying on the sidewalk, while others are helped and shaken by members of the public.

“Oh my God. I recorded the entire accident. I recorded everything Valdemir”, narrates a woman who recorded the exact moment of the accident.

She recorded the scene, where she ended up crying in shock.

Driver

The licensed driver involved in the collision that left five people dead and another 26 injured has already given a statement to the police.

According to the Civil Police, as he presented himself spontaneously, he will be released.

The driver’s trip to the police station, still on Sunday night (31st), was also confirmed by the press office of the Jaboatão dos Guararapes City Council, this Monday (1st), according to findings by the Diario de Pernambuco team.

The information is that the driver presented himself at the Prazeres Police Station, hours after the Easter Sunday tragedy, on the “Adelaide” slope, in the Marcos Freire neighborhood, in Jaboatão, resulting in five deaths and 26 injuries, during a procession of a procession of Our Lady of Perpetual Help.

By means of a note, the Civil Police said that: “The Civil Police of Pernambuco informs that it remains under investigation, through the Sectional Police Station, in Prazeres, regarding the tragic traffic accident, involving a minibus and faithful, in the neighborhood of Marcos Freire, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes. The driver introduced himself and was interviewed on Sunday (31).”

In the same note, the corporation also stated that: “Investigations continue until the incident is fully clarified. More information will be provided after the survey is completed.”
