After more than 20 hours of debates and intense modifications in relation to the original idea, Argentine deputies approved this Tuesday, the 30th, the so-called “Bus Law”, in a victory for president Javier Milei. The text, which still needs to pass the Senate, received 142 votes in favor and 106 in the Chamber of Deputies, in addition to five abstentions.

The reform package paves the way for privatizations and increasing presidential powers, as well as changes to labor law. As the government has a minority in the Chamber and the Senate, and depends on the opposition more to the center, the version approved this Tuesday is much more dry compared to the one that was taken to the Legislature in February.

If before there were 11 sectors, now the Bus Law grants the Executive the ability to govern without Congress in just four areas for one year, namely administrative, economic, financial and energy.

The package also focuses on privatizations and among the companies that are targeted are Aerolíneas Argentinas. There was a proposal to privatize the Banco da Nação, which was withdrawn in the last days of negotiations.

The idea is that the legislative package will be completely approved by May 25th, the date on which Milei called for the so-called “May Pact”, a document with ten priority items that will be signed together with governors.
