The impeachment is another chapter in the tumultuous Venezuelan pre-election, which has already seen the main opponent arrested. At the beginning of the month, Lula called for Maduro’s “presumption of innocence”, but today he praised the opposition.

There is no legal explanation, no political explanation, for you to ban an opponent from being a candidate. Here, it is prohibited to prohibit unless you have a judicial position. Brazil will try to watch this election. I don’t want anything better or worse: I want the elections to be held like we do in Brazil. Anyone who wants to participate participates.
Lula, about Venezuela

“I said [ao Maduro] that the most important thing to recognize normality was not to have problems in the electoral process”, said Lula. He again made a comparison with his situation in 2018, when he was prevented from contesting the election amid Lava Jato investigations, but reinforced that, this time, in Venezuela, there was no justification.

Itamaraty had already released a note questioning the impediment. The text states that, “the deadline for registering candidates for the Venezuelan presidential elections has passed, last night [25]the Brazilian government follows with expectation and concern the development of the electoral process in that country”.

In the text, Itamaraty says that what happened “is not compatible with the Barbados agreements”. “The impediment has not, to date, been the subject of any official explanation”, criticized the Brazilian MRE.

The Brazilian position revolted Maduro, Lula’s historical ally. Yesterday (27), the Venezuelan Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a response note that calls the Itamaraty text “interventionist” and “appears to have been dictated” by the United States.
